Project Description
Almans Movie Poster
Alman is the Turkish word for „German“. Although the term is neutral in its origins, it has become a slang word to make fun of German stereotypes. This simple, yet impactful shift in connotations represents a counter-movement to the terms and prejudices native germans use in regards to foreigners and minorities. So in a nutshell, an Alman can be described as the ultimate „square“. It is someone who is only focused on german quirks and habits while being mostly ignorant to other cultures. The 2018 short film with the same title
cleverly manages to subvert these xenophobic and racist propaganda by the German alt-right movement by taking them quite literally, word for word. It gained much acclaim at the Bilder Beben film festival, as well as high praise by renowned film critic Wolfgang M. Schmitt. The poster shows a key scene from the move, which is reversed into negative colors, to highlight the subversive themes. Also the brutally bold headline represents the strict German attitude every „Alman“ abides to.
